A minimum of thirteen people lose their lives and 98 injured in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the pace and management of the country's key government projects.

The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a line constructed to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.

“We are going to thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this incident,” stated the head of state.

The official reported that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The official stated plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the immediate past president, whose time in office finished the year before. This venture was intimately linked to his administration's strategic agenda for the southern region.

Another ambitious rail project from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to revitalize the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Building Management and Risks Apprehensions

The building of both rail lines was supervised by the nation's military, marking a dramatic increase of its duties in civilian infrastructure. They were executed at an rapid rate, surpassing forecasts to be at least partly launched before the end of that presidency.

However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently raised ongoing questions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This involves an prior crash this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had two non-fatal derailments.

Appeals for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a primary political opposition urged an immediate pause in the construction and operation of all such projects.

This halt was suggested while awaiting a comprehensive independent investigation. The party stated that the loss of life "demands swift accountability."

In reply, the president asserted that the train had been functioning in complete adherence to all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the construction and management of these vital projects.
