Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with France's air force in a joint strike on an subterranean weapons facility in Syria employed by the IS group, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The location, pinpointed through intelligence, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was located in hills just north of the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a several entry passages providing entry to the site... initial indications suggest the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the strike conducted Saturday night and every plane involved returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - established jihadist rule over parts of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This strike demonstrates our UK leadership, and determination to operate in unison with our partners, to eliminate any re-emergence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

British military aircraft have conducted surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted comeback" of IS subsequent to its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I must thank every member of our armed forces involved in this mission for their professionalism and their courage," Healey added. "They were among numerous British troops deployed over the festive period. This action, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who endanger our way of life, highlights how British military are prepared to act, continuously, keeping Britain secure at home and strong abroad."

In December, the US military executed what it described as a "major assault" against Daesh sites in the country, after an attack claimed the lives of two US troops and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN estimates IS still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in Iraq and Syria.
