Powerful Gales Cause Tens of Thousands Without Power in New Zealand

Storm damage in New Zealand
Citizens urged to remain inside as powerful gusts batter the region.

Intense gales hitting velocities of as high as 155km/h (96mph) have resulted in around 90,000 properties without power and forced agencies to call off in excess of 100 flights, according to local media.

These gusts are affecting the whole South Island and southern parts of the northern region, as stated by the country's meteorological service.

Officials in New Zealand have announced infrequent high-level wind alerts - the top caution category - in key areas encompassing Wellington and Canterbury.

Residents have been urged to stay indoors, avoid travel, and prepare for more utility disruptions.

Extensive Destruction and Emergency Measures

The power cut is primarily influencing households mainly in the South Island, while agencies report that energy was being slowly brought back.

Domestic outlets have indicated that in certain areas roofs have been ripped off houses, while utility poles and vegetation have been knocked down by the gales.

Within the capital, a man was lost his life after being hit by a tree branch at a popular trail walking spot on earlier this week.

Meanwhile in Wellington, a woman was swept into approaching vehicles on a street by a strong gust of wind, in a event that was captured in a popular vehicle recording.

Aircraft services in and out of the metropolis have been halted because of the weather, and various routes and public facilities are also closed.

At the same time local leaders have declared a emergency situation, to support recovery activities.

Labor Protests Amid Extreme Conditions

These intense gusts on today come as many of educators, medical professionals and government employees are engaged in what has been described as a "major walkout", requesting better pay and working conditions.

However the severe conditions has pressured them to modify various scheduled activities, with some outdoor rallies moved indoors or called off.

Similar gusts are impacting Australia, ushering in a heatwave to the country's outback.

Agencies have declared flame prohibitions for concern about forest fires.
